To be a retiree in Russia

My grandmom is moving from Ukraine to Russia to live with us, so we've started searching for some info about the registration process and all that stuff. When looking for a way to get her pension benefit transfered from Ukrain to Russia, I got across some laws regulating our pension system.
The idea I got after reading them is that there're only 2 ways to be a retiree in Russia. The first one is to leave the country before you become one, the second is never to become a retiree and work until you die.

The basic part of the pension benefit in this country is around $50 US, of course there's another part payed from your accumulated contributions to the pension fund, but in total the medium pension benefit in Russia is about $200 US. To give you an idea of what yo can buy in Russia for this money: a meal in McDonalds - $5-6, the cheapest rent of a flat in Moscow - $500 a month, salary of an office worker, starting his carreer - $700 a month.

So you really need to invest in your children so that they will support you when you stop working in this country. So may be we should openly implement the system of Thailand then and not humiliate our elderly people with such pensions.

  1. Thank you for an interesting information. In turn, I write about a part of Japanese social security system.

The pension of self-employers, national pension is only 66000 Japanese yen a month. It is about 700 dollars. But, government guarantee about 100000yen(about 1050dollars) a month as public assistance to elder people without pension. It is an inconsistency, but a fact.
