Sochi 2014

Here's the promo video of winter Olympics in Sochi 2014, that is broadcasted on our TV. I don't think they will ever show it abroad, because it is aimed at russian people. The main piculiarity of it is its text. I guess it'll be hard to understand it, unless you've lived in the country for quite a time and you understand the way we think. It's based on inconsistency of our people, of our emotions and acts, and that's why it so understandable for us.

Here' s the translation I've tried to make, each phrase reminds of lots of things, that are our everyday life. So if you find it hard to get, what smth means, just ask me about a particular line, and I'll try to explain it.

We are people of extremes.
We work hard to earn money in the North and we spend it easily in the South.
We drive offroad as well (good) as on road.
Even the New Year can be an old one by us.
When we win, it’s for long.
We believe in ourselves in such a way, that we make others believe in us, too.
It won’t be usual with us.
It will be great Olympic Games.
Olympics of the whole country, Olympics of everyone.
Let’s go!

A sunny day

Recently there've been several sunny days. Unfortunately when I get to work it's still dark and when I leave home it's already dark. So I took a pic of the nearby building to remember that they're some sunny days here. By the way it was -27C then.
Now it's again cloudy and -2C.

Zima

As I promised I'm posting some photos of our winter - zima in russian. Today I went for a walk with my dog and took my camera with me. The day was cloudy, so it looks a little bit dull, however it's still beautiful. The temperature is -7 C, no wind. So it's not that cold, i guess i can say it's rather refreshing.

Winter

Today's my birthday. I received 2 beautiful bouquets of flowers at work, people said some really nice words to me, though it still feels kinda sad, don't know why.

Our teacher of Japanese said that in Japan people don't pay much attention to birthdays. Here in Russia birthday is supposed to be one of the most important holidays for a person during a year. And it's a good thing to invite friends and family to a party or to a restaurant. At work you are to treat your colleagues with something tasty, so finally birthday turns out to be rather costly for the one, who celebrates it.

Two days ago the real winter started. It snowed heavily and the temperature went below 0. I love winter for snow and long nights, and I'm happy, that it finally came. Later I'll make some pics of winter outside Moscow, 'cause it's really beautiful.

Manga about Yukos and Mr. Khodorkovsky

I never thought that the topic of Yukos and it's head Mr. Khodorkovsky was so widly discussed, that it went out as a manga book in Japan... I found it today by chance at an online rental by CD Japan.

Before I've seen some bizzare manga about Stalin, but I gues it was more of some ill imagination of the mangaka, than the real thing. I wonder if there's alreadey manga about our president and prime minister.

Unexpected holiday

Last Sunday I was stupid enough to hurt badly my leg just by making a reckless step. So I went to the doctor and he told me to stay at home for at least a weak. Actually it was great. At first I thought I would be boared, but then there were so many things to do, that I didn't even notice how the time passed. It was my first time to miss work because of problems with health, and I'm glad I wasn't down with flu.

Though I still can't walk normally, I'm going to work starting Monday.

Cirque du Soleil: Varekai

Deep within a forest, at the summit of a volcano, exists an extraordinary world—a world where something else is possible. A world called Varekai.

From the sky falls a solitary young man, and the story of Varekai begins. Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest, a kaleidoscopic world populated by fantastical creatures, this young man sets off on an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. On this day at the edge of time, in this place of all possibilities, begins an inspired incantation to life rediscovered.

The word Varekai means "wherever" in the Romany language of the gypsies the universal wanderers. This production pays tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus tradition, and to the infinite passion of those whose quest takes them along the path that leads to Varekai

Yesterday we went to see this amazing show. I was really impressed with costumes, music and style. The actors were really great. In the video you can see one of the acts - "Solo on Crutches". The reason I chose it is that the actor completely won my heart. I think he's a really brave person, 'cause he is able to do such things despite his condition.

Well, actually I watched the performance like another proof of the fact, that the human abilities are only limited by imagination, and it concerns not only physical abilities, but also art, music, etc. It inspires me to see things beyond general way of thinking.

Unfortunately I couldn't get a dvd of the show, there were no more left. But I'll sure keep it in my memories. I hope the circus will come back soon.

PS: The costume designer is a Japanese - Eiko Ishioka, I don't know why, but I wasn't surprised to hear that at all.

Tsar

Here's the trailer of a movie I went to see yesterday. It is about one of the most difficult periods in russian history. At the same time it focuses on the meaning of the devine and secular power. The movie is rather heavy, still I think it was worth seeing it. Such movies always make me want to find out what really happened back then *though it's impossible, unless someone invents a time machine*.

Russian for foreigners

Surfing the net I came across a site for russian language learners, I read a couple of topics, and now I can asuure you 100%, that russian IS difficult. It's a language of exceptions, so if you need to learn it (I doubt that there're many people willing to learn it just for fun, 'cause it's no fun), you just have to take everything as it is and not to expect many regular things as in most european languages.

bike-san, your help is needed^^

Yesterday in my japanese class we were discussing counting suffixis, like -satsu for books, etc. Then there came a question with which suffixes do japanese count mermaides, centaures and other mythological creatures. I suppose it should be -nin for mermaids (like for people) and -tou for centaures, but I'm not sure. And I heard there were some special suffixes for demons and gods, is that right?

It would be very kind of you, bike-san, if you could help me to find the answer to the question. :)

PS: Sorry, I can't write in Japanese from this computer, it doesn't have oriental languages installed on it.

Strange people in metro

We have a lot of strange people in metro, I guess it's the same in any other big city. This Saturday I saw a man writing some lyrics of his own on an advertisment poster with a marker. No one was really paying attention to him. The lyrics were about the stupidity of our TV (the ad was of a magazine with a TV program).

First Japanese class

On Friday I had my first Japanese class. I have 2 classes a week, one with a russian teacher that will teach us grammar, and the other with a japanese sensei to teach us the right pronunciation and some facts about Japan and japanese language. Sooo... The first lesson was with Kentaro-sensei, he is originally from Tokyo, don't know why he came to russia but he is studing here and writing a paper. He speaks russian fluently with a funny accent. He's a nice person, but I guess he can be harsh sometimes. And I guess he does "business" for his family, as he helps his russian students to go to Japan - his family rents them a room to stay, they make an invitation for a visa, etc.
I don't particularly like my group, 'cause people don't look like hardworking to me, so Kentaro-sensei let me come to another class of his with another group and I liked it a lot... Still they a little bit ahead of me, so I need to work hard to catch up, till then I'll be staying with my initial group.

Inside a train at a rush hour

The post was inspired by the photo posted in bike-san's blog. So you here you go: russian train during rush hour. The photo is not really clear, I took it with my mobile, so sorry for that, but you can get the idea of how crowded it is.

Berlin Wall in Moscow

Today after work I decided to go another way to another metro station and I was very surprised to se a park and a piece of Berlin Wall as a monument there. I knew we had it somwhere in Moscow, but I never imagined it would be so close.

New job

Actually I'm staying with the same company but i've been transfered to another unit. Now I'm a credit analyst. This turned out to be pretty interesting, at least here we have mounts of work, so I found myself staying late right on the second day of my new job. Now I also have less free time, but that's ok, I'm really looking forward to getting new experience and knowledge.

I've also started planing my next holiday. I'd like to go to southern Spain in September. I've been to Spain numirous times, at least I go there once for three years already. This time we decided to change our usual place which is the coast of Barcelona and to go somewhere near Malaga. If I'm lucky enough I'll get to see Cordoba. I also have some friends in Spain, may be we'll have a chance to meet. SO I'm looking forward to this trip.

Cycling on weekend

This weekend I went cycling with my friends, I haven't done it quite for a long time. But I was sure it'll be fun. We went to a small river nearby where we stopped to have a chat. Suddenly it started to rain. At first it was ok and we decided to wait under a tree, but later it began pouring down, and we went quickly to hide at an entrance of a house. We were totally wet by that time. When the rain almost finished we went home... I live nearby, so for me it was ok, but the boys had do ride another 20 minutes to get home, and they were caught with another rain.

Anyway, it was great. It's summer time, so it's warm and rains are really nice like this.

To be a retiree in Russia

My grandmom is moving from Ukraine to Russia to live with us, so we've started searching for some info about the registration process and all that stuff. When looking for a way to get her pension benefit transfered from Ukrain to Russia, I got across some laws regulating our pension system.
The idea I got after reading them is that there're only 2 ways to be a retiree in Russia. The first one is to leave the country before you become one, the second is never to become a retiree and work until you die.

The basic part of the pension benefit in this country is around $50 US, of course there's another part payed from your accumulated contributions to the pension fund, but in total the medium pension benefit in Russia is about $200 US. To give you an idea of what yo can buy in Russia for this money: a meal in McDonalds - $5-6, the cheapest rent of a flat in Moscow - $500 a month, salary of an office worker, starting his carreer - $700 a month.

So you really need to invest in your children so that they will support you when you stop working in this country. So may be we should openly implement the system of Thailand then and not humiliate our elderly people with such pensions.

Facebook

I'm not really fond of all those social networks, especially those local ones (I mean russian). But then I got an invitation to join Facebook from one of my friends I got to know 4 years ago in Cologne (Germany). We were studing german there and we had an incredible month with people from Spain, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia... I really miss that time. So I took the chance and signed up. And I found all those people there. The russian girl is married to a spanish boy now and lives in Madrid, the Mexican works with Volkswagen back in Mexico, the Italian is now in Austria... And now I want to go and visit them all.

I found another person there. He's a turkish boy we got aquainted with when having a holiday, he studied in the US then. That trip was also much fun, so I'm glad he remembered me. Now he lives in Istanbul.

The thing I like the most about modern life is that you can find yourself in a completely different place with completely different people around you, and you can have a lot of fun, learn lots of new things. And then, after several years, you can still meet those people as if you talked to them only yesterday.

Ra:IN in Moscow

On the 26th of June we had a concert of Japanese band Ra:IN here in Moscow. It's famous for its remarkable music and famous members (PATA from X JAPAN, DIE - support member of hide and GLAY). The concert was delayed for 3 hours, but every minute of expectation was worth it. I haven't seen such a powerful performance for a long time. Those guys looked like real rock stars from the past and they rocked the house. There manager turned to be very friendly, too. I wish they would come back soon.

You can find some pics from the concert if you need here.

Graduation

On the 30th of June I had a graduation party at my University. I finished my studies and got my diploma.

Here're two pics of my friends and me.

Here're several photos from Prague. It was a great trip and once again I fell in love with the place.

Prague, wait for me!

On Wednesday I'm leaving for Prague. It's my third visit to the city and I'm really looking forward to it. I've been their once with my parents and once with my schoolmates. Now I'm a "grown-up", so I'll be dicovering the city anew. My friend comes with me, so I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun.

I really love the city, I believe it's one of the most fascinating cities of the world with its unique atmosphere made up of mysteriousness, great history and art... and beer of course XD.

This trip will also make one of my dreams come true. And I'm already happy about it.

Which is the true history?

Lately it's been widely discussed in russian mass media, that many countries do interprete history of their relations with other countries in inadquate way. For example: In Russia every schoolchild knows, that the crucial part of wining against fasism in Europe belongs to Russia, in the USA they believe that only thanks to americans the WWII finished as it did. In our textbooks on history it's said that tzars of Georgia asked Ekaterina II (our Tzarina at that time) to let Georgia be part of Russia still in 18th century in order to be protected from agressive neighbours, but now they say theat Russia occupied the country in a military way and made them enter Russian Empire and then the Soviet Union.

I know, that the saying "many men many minds" works perfectly here, and that it's also a matter of national propaganda, but I would like to know, what really happened back then. Though it looks next to impossible now to know the truth.

The thing I hate the most about it is the fact that national governments are trying to find some external enemies or offenders to distract people from what is happening inside the country, by appealing to such feelings as patriotism, national pride, etc. I think it is mean. I only hope that such small conflicts now won't lead to any big problems later.

Final exam

Sorry for staying silent for too long. But there was a reason for that.

Today I passed my final exam at my university. The only thing left to do is the defence of my graduation project or diploma. And then I'm supposed to be a highly educated specialist in Inernational Market Affairs and Foreign Trade.

I wish the exam was at least a bit harder. It made no difference from those I've had before. And I'm affraid I'll forget soon about it, 'cause it was just too plain to remember.

First Squad: The Moment Of Truth

Первый отряд. Момент истины
ファースト・スクワッド

It's an anime that's finally is ready to be released. What's so special about? Its story is made by russians, but the artwork is done by japanese Studio 4°C. It's been several years since they anounced it and they even had the first trailer made for a PV of a russian rap band (which done the OST for the anime) in 2005. The plot depicts a special squad of red soviet army during the WWII fighting against the fasists.

The first show of the anime was 3 days ago in Cannes. I hope I can watch it soon. Try their web page (link is in the heading), it's really fun.

And I do love works of Studio 4°C^^

Captive (plennyi)

It's a russian-bulgarian movie filmmed in 2008 about 2 russian soldiers during Chechen war taking a captive (a checehn boy Jamal) to show them the way out of the mountains.

They showed the movie today on TV, unfortunately I watched only the final part, but I liked it a lot.

The movie gives you a mixed feeling, it explores the human nature at war without giving any evaluation to the characters' actions but still manages to show that each action has some internal struggle in their hearts as a background.

After broadcating the movie they showed some talkshow with actors, producer, story writer, critics, etc. I really wish I didn't see it, 'cause they managed to ruin all the mood after watching the film. They were discussing some stupid things and telling some trivial thoughts, distracting your attention from speculating on the movie itself. Though I liked the things told by the author of the original. He dwelled on the way he wrote the story and what he planned initially and why it ended like it did.

We are having lots of war movies filmed lately, and most of them are just for propaganda and giving you the feeling that you're leaving in a great and strong country. But they don't make you think. And this movie does. That's why I liked it.

1 Maya (May, 1st)

Tomorrow is the first day of May and we (I mean in Russia and some Post Soviet Countries) celebrate another holiday. It's devoted to labor. Well, some people say the history of the holiday goes back to ancient Rome (where they celebrated the begining of sowing and prayed for the goddess of fertility Maya). Later in America in 1886 there was some riots organized by socialists and communists organisations in the USA and Canada. There were six people killed during such a demonstration in Chicago. In return they set up a bomb and killed several policemen, 4 people were sentenced to death. In 1889 II International Congress (don't know the right term for it, sorry) suggested celebrating the day as the Labour Day.

In Russia the holiday was first celebrated in 1890. At first the demonstration on that day were unofficial. In 1917 there were held official demonstration (yeah, we had already Soviet government back then). And so it went till 1992 when it was renamed in the Spring and Labour Day. The motto of the day was "Peace, Labour, May"

Now we don't have any particular demonstrations like we used to back in Soviet times (I even remember participating in one of them when I was a kid). Only some socialist and communist parties gather their followers in the center of Moscow. But everything goes rather peacefully. The majority of population is just enjoying another free-of-duty day, going for a holiday or staying with a family. As it coincides with the begining of cropping season many people go to their country houses.

Bellow you'll find some posters from Soviet times.

Japanese bands are finally coming to Russia

This year there is a break through in our J music scene, 'cause lots of bands are coming this year. We already had concerts on An Cafe, MONO, Iruma Rioka, SUGIZO (with Juno Reactor) and we gonna have D'esparsRay, girugamesh and miyavi coming next. I know all our J music fans worked hard together to bring these bands to our country and there're rumours that many more bands are coming next.

I was kinda lucky. One of the orgs, that are bringing D'espairsRay to Russia, is an acquaintance of mine. So she promised I'll come to the concert free of charge. It's symbolic. The first J rock band I've ever been to was also D'espairsRay's live but in Madrid 2006. My friend and me arranged our holiday trip that year so that we could go to see the band. It was a real miracle back then. Since that time I've been to several other bands' concerts, both in Europe and home in Russia. I hope someday I'll welcome my favorite bands in my city^^

Sunny weekend

The forecast turned true and we really had more than 20 C last weekend. That's why we decided to open the bbq season. Here are some pics of the first flowers we have and also of our bbq

Don Quixote ballet

Well, as I've already said, I'm not really fond of classical art. But as my mom somehow managed to get two tickets for the ballet for free we decided to buy one more and to go all together (I mean my mom, my sister and me).

When going to some concerts or other events I really like watching the audience. This time it seemed that there were mainly some ballet fans (mainly elderly people), foreigners (as attending russian ballet is considered to be one of the tusks to accomplish when touring Russia) and some kids (taken on an excursion from school). And yes, we still have the culture of dressing up all nicely when going to ballet or opera.

The piece itself turned out pretty entertaining. Actually I expected it to be really boring, but the young lively characters managed to keep you following them. The ballet consisted of three parts. Actually we watched only two, 'cause my mom was tired after a long day at work and we left earlier. I liked the first part better. There was more action and there was some kind of plot. The dancers performed almost with the expression of some drama actors. The second part was somewhat more technical, it was devided in several parts, in each stared one dancer performing some difficult jumps or movements. You know it really amazes me to see what people can reach by constant trainings and by puting their soul in what the are doing. But on the other hand there was no particular meaning in that - just to watch beautiful dances (which gets boring after an hour). May be if I had some deeper knowledge of the art it would make some sence to me. Anyway it was a good show and I don't regret going to see it.

Bolshoi Theatre web page here in the upper right corner you can see some pics of the performers.

Crazy weather

It is soooo cold in Moscow this April. I think it's the coldest spring I can remember. To illustrate this I'll show you a photo I took 2 days ago (-4 C) on my mobile when going to work. The fontain is working and freezing at the same time. This Sunday they say it will be + 20 C. I really hope so

Another birthday

Yesterday we celebrated another birthday. My friend turned 22 and on the occasion he decided to take everyone to a beerhouse. When I asked him if there was anything special he wanted as a birthday present he said he wanted a toycar on radio control. So I went and got it for him. He was absolutely happy or at least so it seems.

The party actually was another possibility to get everyone together and to have a good talk. All of us study in the same university but we don't see each other much lately because we have no more classes but we work and write our final paper. Two of my friends are planing to go to Austria to study for MFA, one of the boys is living with his girlfriend and it really seems they are going to marry. You know, it's interesting to see how everything changes just in some small period of time.

And I also have to decide what to do next.

PS: Tonight I'm going to the Bolshoy Theatre to see ballet Don Quixote. Though I'm not really fond of classical performances I'll check it out and tell you my impressions tomorrow.

Traveling as a lifestyle

Here's the great article on what is a Traveler. The article is really inspiring and makes you wanna try this life out. It describes some advantages and disadvantages of living a life as a traveler. But there're always buts.

I know I'm getting to personal, far from being objective, but I think it's ok to leave your things, friends, partners behind and just take a chance to go on a trip. It really can give you a lot of experience, what is the most important thing in life after all for me. And I understand that it only needs a strong desire to do it and then you can do it. But for me there's one thing I can't leave behind and that's my family. I know they need my support now. Of course they can live fine without me around, but I can't stand the thought of making these people's life harder (people, who put a lot of effort in bringing me up and supporting me). I wonder if there'll ever be a point in my life when the wish to leave everything and to go to some faraway place will eventually overpower my sence of responsobility (so to say).

I feel like being a traveler, I really can't stand the idea of staying constantly at one place, knowing that there's SOOO much to see and to experience around the world. And I'm quite sure I'll be perfectly fine living such a life not to say happy. But at the same time I have a fear, and that is being caught up with the routine, which later will never give me a chance to get out. I know it'll take only a couple of years to get stuck in it up to my ears and i'm really affraid of it. Besides I'm now just that common person with good education, good job, nice meetings with friends at a good cafe described in the article

Sometimes I wish I were alone or at least I could really leave everything behind.

Birthday present

Today is one of my friend's birthday. It took us a long time time to come up with a present and finally we decided to give him a duck radio for bath/shower. Ok, its not that useful or anything but it IS hard to find a good present for someone who has almost everything. So it's ok if the present is fun. Here's the pic of it.

Strange thoughts

There's a bird that often knocks at my window. Today morning it waked me up exactly at the time I'm supposed to get up and than flew away when saw me standing and looking at it through the window. It IS strange. The bird also knocks at my sister's room window. It sometimes looks like it wants to get in or may be it wants us to go outside.

With this in mind I've started thinking about reincarnation and all that stuff. I hate the idea of everyone being mortal. So it would be at least something if we knew for sure that our soul and mind would be reincarnated in some other form. And may be this particular bird still remembers smth of her human life and may be it even knew me or my family. I really want to believe in it.

Dreams come true

The article tells us about an American girl who's now an assistant by renowned mangaka Takeshi Konomi, the author of Prince of Tennis.

A great story of success.

The thing I really like about the USA and Europe is that their citizens can easily go to other countries, it's easier to travel. I really wish I didn't need to go through visa application procedure each time I wanna go somewhere.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

Finally I watched the movie. They were broadcasting it on TV on Friday night. To tell you the truth I didn't like it and I don't really understand, why it got so many Oscars. Anyway It's a good fairy tale with happy end. And I liked really the way it is filmed or the cameraman's work, dunno how it is called.

My Mom's birthday

On the 3d we cellebrated my Mom's birthday. These are the pics of the flowers I gave her. Actually my sister and me couldn't find a good birthday present for her and the only idea we had (to give her a tennis racket) was taken away by her colleagues. So we had nothing left to do but to take her out to a restaurant. She was also presented with a big basket full of tasty things and a big bottle of spanish wine. And there're flowers everywhere *but I belive mu bouquet is the best*.

Anyway she seemed happy and that's the best thing.

Kula Shaker

Yesterday together with my school friend we went to Kula Shaker's concert at B2 in Moscow. I used to listen to their music when I was in junior high under the influence of that friend of mine. Then I got into japanese music and stopped listening to the stuff I used to. So it was like a trip back to my school days.

I didn't think the band was so popular. The club was packed, the tickets were almost sold out. I must say they did a great show. It reminded me of the rock bands of the 60-70s like the doors with a bit harder sound. The music was relaxing and made everyone to move. Of course there were some freaky fans, but in general the people were nice. The only thought which kept me from enjoying the event to the fullest is that it didn't really seem the the frontman enjoyed the show. Somehow he looked like just doing his job.

We left after my favorite Govinda. I don't really know if there was another encore after the song, cause almost everyone stayed to wait for it. They gave out autographs as far as I get from the blog posts I looked through. But I don't really care. Another dream from my schooldays came true and I'm really happy about it. I enjoyed the concert, I liked the music and I relaxed. Again I noticed that it's better to watch some bands playing live than to listen to some record. And that was definitely the case. I guess I should go to concert more often.

Bruce Osborn's Oyako

If you press the link in the heading you'll see a collection of photos by Bruce Osborn. He took shots of parents and their kids in Japan. Some of them are really suprising. Like a daughter - porn star and her father first a zoo shop keeper and then porn script writer. Some are cute. There's also a short text about each family on the shots. It IS interesting to read.

And here you can find some really nice essays on the topic.

My friend and me in a park in Berlin

Photobucket

Grebnevo

Last sunday my friend and me went to a nearby village to visit the former mansion house of the local aristocrates. Now it's almost completly crumbled, with only one building staying in some kind of normal condition. Here you can take a look at some pics of how the place used to be and what is left now: http://www.fryazino.info/index.php?mod=15&folder=33

I thought it was absolutely beautiful... If only it was in proper condition. One can see a lovely view on the garden (almost undefinable now) and on the small river from one of the balconies of the main building. Besides the area maintaines good ecology, it's not as polluted as some nearby places due to the forest being not far from it. I guess you could make a good touristic business after its restoration, but again that requires money.

And it turned out to be extremly popular among local couples, 'cause during our stay there we've noticed several pairs of all lovey-dovey yongsters going around the place. So it is still considered romantic.

Well, in any case i really would like to hope, that we'll become more aware and proud of our oun history and culture and it want be late to restore such nice places as this one.

Dir en grey last song

There's a message from a girl on lj who got into a car accident while trying to light a ciggarette today listening to Dir en grey. The song playing was Child Prey. You know it's kinda symbolic. I guess it'd be a good thing dying when listening to your favorite band's song. I guess I don't really care what song it'll be since I like lots of them. But still it would be nice and scary.

Loosing faith

I'm starting to loose faith in my friends. Somehow it seems now that there's no way they need me, but just using for some reason and when they don't need me anymore they'll stop comunicating with me. I know it's kinda stupid, but i can't help thinking about it. I wanna go to some far away place now, so that everyone will forget about me...

My poor stupid dog

Yesterday some car knocked down my poor dog. I know he's too energetic and kinda naive and stupid. He had been bitten several times badly by dogs, know he is even being knocked by a car. Now he lies all poor and pitiful near his dog house. We had him operated yesterday. They said he'll be all right. But who knows, especially when he continues do the same...

Here's his pic from when he was injured last time.
